Welcome to WNCPrepTrack.com

My name is David Pickett (photo), I'm the cofounder and editor of WNCPrepTrack.com. Asheville High men's cross country and track & field coach, Chris Stroup was the original founder. I recreated this website in August 2004.

I graduated high school from TC Roberson in 2006. While in high school I was a three year letterman in track & field. My senior year, I was named All-WNC Honorable Mention by the Asheville Citizen-Times and earned Class 3-A Mountain Athletic All-Conference honors as well. I also played junior varsity and varsity soccer while at TC.

After high school I attended East Tennessee State University for a year. While at ETSU, I played striker on the club soccer team.

I earned a diploma in Arts on August 1, 2008 from Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College. I will be attending Western Carolina University this fall to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science. I also plan to walk-on the track & field team.

The main purpose why I started this site was to recognize the outstanding high school track & field and cross country athletes in the western part of North Carolina. I also wanted to make it easier on George Phillips of NCPrepTrack.com. Phillips became overwhelmed with the workload of posting results and updating statistical lists. He was cutting in to a great deal of time with his family, career and personal demands. Another aspect was to promote the sport for what it deserves. In my opinion, track & field and cross country lacks media support. Journalists should take a look at the participation numbers.

These are athlete sport participation numbers from the most recent reporting on the NCHSAA site.
NC HS participation numbers 2001-2002 (Most Recent) -

Football #1 Men – 22,061, Outdoor Track # 2 Men - 10,784
Outdoor Track Women # 1 - 7,280

The most participants in any women’s sport is track & field, second most in men’s to football. Combined (since football does not have a counterpart) Men and Women 18,064. These numbers do not include cross country or indoor track.

National numbers are just as impressive, with outdoor track as the number two total participation to basketball. If you add indoor track, it surpasses basketball for the number one spot. I have noting against the other sports, but let’s be honest, it certainly deserves more coverage than we are getting.
