ASHEVILLE, NC —
From being one of the
nation’s best high school
sprinters his freshman and
sophomore days at
Mount Tabor High School in
Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, J-mee Samuels
missed his junior season for
an incident involving
another student; which he
choose not to comment on.
With the long miserable
break off, of not running in
the 2004 season, Samuels had
to work twice as hard. “I
had to step it up ,” said
Samuels in an over the phone
conference from his Winston
Salem, North Carolina home
Wednesday night.
Over the summer Samuels hard
work had paid off. Samuels
posted 10.07 with an aiding
wind of 3.6 meters per
second, in the 100 meters at
the Russell E. Blunt East
Coast Invitational meet in
Greensboro, North
Carolina. A couple weeks later he journey to
Des Moines, Iowa for the AAU
Junior Olympic Games, were
he ran wind aid legal time
of 10.25 and 20.58. Samuels
led the nation.
Samuels signed in November
to run for NCAA powerhouse
track team Arkansas
Razorbacks.
Now back in his final
season at
Mount
Tabor as a senior, Samuels
has poised to be the fastest
sprinter in the nation this
year in indoors.
Two days before Valentines,
Samuels won the 55 meter
state title in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina, with a time
of 6.23. He had a double
sprint victory in the 60
meters and 200 meters, at
the Simplot Games in
Pocatello, Idaho. In the 60
meters were he PR at 6.72,
200 meters 21.47. Samuels
has the fastest times in the
55 meters and 60 meters this
year, second fastest 200.
It’s been along road up to
this point for the North
Carolina sprinter, but he
isn’t done.
This weekend, Samuels is
the top entry in both sprint
events at the National
Scholastic Sports
Foundation’s Nike Indoor
Classic, March 12-13 in
Landover, Maryland.
Samuels will run the 60
meters and 200 meters this
weekend. Samuels won the 200
meters his sensational
sophomore season back in
2003, with a time of 21.76.
Samuels just missed the 60
meter title by 0.01, 6.74
was his time. His freshman
year in 2002 at this meet he
ran 6.91 in prelims
finishing second, but fell
to go on from the semi
finals with an 10th
place finish.
Samuels says this year he is
pushing for 6.6 in the 60
meters, and low 21’s in the
200 meters. “All the hard
training for this meet is
over,” said Samuels. “I have
been going easy, not hard”.
6.57 is the national record
in the 60 meters, set by
Casey Combest of
Owensboro, Kentucky
in 1999. While the 200
meters national record is
21.02, set by Brendan
Christian of Reagan, Texas
in 2001. Samuels former
Mount Tabor teammate though,
Mike Loyd has the meet
record of 21.68.
“I am mentally ready for
whatever happens,” said
Samuels.
Note: We couldn’t contact
Mount Tabor
coach Mike Esposito at time
of interview for additional
comments on Samuels. |
CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK
For the 7th straight
year we close the high school indoor season with two
national meets on the same weekend --
NIC at PG Sportsplex at
Landover MD next to the Washington Redskins stadium and
NSIC
at the New York Armory off Broadway at 168th street
in Manhattan.
With two national stages
there are twice as many opportunities for athletes to bask
in the limelight. But some events inevitably are deprived of
the face to face showdown you expect in a national
championship. The girls 800 suffers the most this time --
talent in the deepest HS event of the season is split
between the two meets.
Nike Indoor will
be televised
NIN will be televised on Comcast CN8
Sports in a 2-hour show March 20 at 9 pm and repeated March
26 at 3 pm. People outside the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
regions can see the show on the Internet at www.cn8.tv.

If they handed out Comeback
of the Year Awards for high
school athletes, J-Mee
Samuels would have been
last year’s leading
contender. Samuels is a top
entry in both sprint events
at the National Scholastic
Sports Foundation’s Nike
Indoor Classic, March 12-13
in Landover, Maryland.
One of the nation’s top
preps his freshman and
sophomore years at Mount
Tabor High School in
Winston-Salem, North
Carolina, Samuels dropped
off the radar screen last
spring. “J-Mee was
ineligible for us after an
incident with another
student last year,” said
Mount Tabor coach Mike
Esposito, choosing not to
elaborate. “He made a
mistake, and he paid the
price.”
