3A State Meet Preview

The 3A meet is this Saturday at Tanglewood Park. It seems that on paper 3 of the 4 state titles are locks, and that the girl's individual title is up for grabs. However, as we know in running, anything can happen.

TC Roberson's girls looked to be a state and SE region powerhouse this year with the talent they were returning. Have they run to expectations? That's not for me to say. They had an outstanding race in the Race of Champions at the Great American XC Festival finishing 11th. Then at the Wendy's Invitational they put two girls under 19:00 and set a new school record for "team average". It doesn't look like any other team can touch them this year. However, Reagan, Catholic, Asheville, Walter Williams, and Jacksonville have been running well this year. Can one of them step it up and battle TC Roberson? We'll see. NC Athletes at Great American -

Great American proved to be a true test for all the teams that competed. Not only was the competition strong, but the course and heat proved to be formidable opponents as well. As I ran the course the day before, I didn’t expect the times to be so slow and the weather to be so hot. Early in the week it looked as if it would be raining all day . . . that was far from true. There were a lot of sunburned faces and arms by day’s end. Ben Hovis has the full story on NCRunners.com

The WNC trail run is a satellite run, taking place the same day as the 8th Annual Autism Ribbon Run in Raleigh, which is expected to attract some 1,600 participants this year.

All proceeds will go to support North Carolina families caring for individuals with autism. Today, there are about 30,000 individuals living with autism in North Carolina. The N.C. Autism Society connects people who live with autism – and those who care for and about them -- with resources, support, advocacy and information. For more information, visit www.autismsociety-nc.org.

* Based on the first-ever national estimate of the prevalence of autism in the United States, conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Released in May 2006, the study found the behavioral disorder affects up to one in every 175 school-age children -- a total of more than 300,000 youngsters.

Coach Matt Sescilla, Photo by Jim Kransberger

Reynold's Matt Sescilla Has Cross Country Aiming For the Top of the Mountain!

Reynolds - Let's see, you run a race on trails that takes you through
the woods, across meadows, jumping a few logs and ditches, climbing a steep mountain, running back down the mountain and then you do it again. No, this isn't your kids finding something to do in the summertime, it's a sport called cross country and you have run a 5K (3.1 miles) race.

Most cross country courses don't have a mountain to climb, but the course at Reynolds is like no other. Matt Sescilla, the coach of the A C Reynolds Rockets Cross Country team since 2002, has no meets at his course this year.
Because Reynolds is the only 4-A school in the mountains and every other school is in the flatland, the other schools in the conference do not drive to the mountains. Reynolds is traveling to every cross country meet they have this year.
